Trump's "Carrot and Stick" Approach to Iran: Increasing Troops in the Middle East While Signaling for Dialogue
BlockBeats News, January 30th — Against the backdrop of high tensions in the US-Iran relationship, US President Trump on Thursday signaled a possible willingness to engage in dialogue with Iran. However, at the same time, the US continues to deploy military forces to the Middle East, further complicating the situation.
Trump stated that he "does have a plan to engage in dialogue with Iran," but did not disclose the format of the dialogue, a timetable, or the US negotiator. He also emphasized that the US has "multiple very powerful warships heading toward Iran" and said that "it would be the best result if they didn't have to be used."
US officials revealed that Trump is still assessing whether to take military action against Iran and has not made a final decision. The recent escalation of US-Iran tensions is attributed to domestic protests in Iran and subsequent crackdown actions. Sources said that the Trump administration has invited senior defense and intelligence officials from Israel and Saudi Arabia this week to discuss the Iran issue.
US Secretary of Defense Esper stated that the US military is prepared to carry out any orders from the president and reiterated that Iran "should not pursue nuclear capability." Trump had previously warned that the US would take action if Iran resumed its nuclear program.
In response, Iran stated that if the US genuinely seeks negotiation and diplomacy, it must cease provocations and the creation of tense situations. Iranian President Rouhani recently held separate phone calls with leaders of Qatar and Pakistan to exchange views on the regional situation and called for strengthening unity and cooperation among Islamic countries.
Overall, the Trump administration is simultaneously advancing military pressure and diplomatic probes, engaging in a "maximum pressure" campaign against Iran.
